FINDING A PURPOSE…

I’ve always been a bit envious of those people with a clear idea as to what their purpose is, almost wishing I too could label myself and ‘belong’ somewhere! I’ve tried lots of things and have a wealth of different experiences, so much so that there’s very much a ‘Jack-of-all-trades, master of none’ aspect to my life. To give you an example, whilst studying to become a footwear designer (and subsequently working as one), I also learned military skills with the British Army! If there was an award for the most random skill set I think I’d win but for some reason I’ve never really found my one true calling.

If this sounds like you, you are not alone. Go ahead and watch this TED video and you will realise being adaptable to various roles and interested in many things is not something to be frustrated with or feel down about. According to Emilie Wapnick we should celebrate the fact that we can give so much of ourselves to different fields, calling us “multipotentialities” and suggesting that we should embrace our versatility, not fight it.

That’s all very easy to say of course; not so easy to live with. How can I find my place in the world and follow my bliss if I feel pulled in totally different directions?! In trying to solve this mystery, I find myself rapidly becoming a self-development junkie, devouring books, podcasts and blogs but I think what I really need is to just calm down and pick one thing I enjoy. Perhaps the rest will all fall into place and, like the Law of Attraction, I will manifest the answers by focusing on what I really want and aiming everything I do at that final destination.

In which case, let me start with this hobby of mine: creating leather accessories. It’s going to be a tough gig finding any time to make things now that I have a baby but, there’s definitely potential to turn my passion into something more substantial. Maybe this is the one!

Time to start making again and find out…
